For decades, laser eye surgery has revolutionized vision correction; however, it is not the only option for addressing refractive errors. Patients considering vision correction procedures often arrive at two options — LASIK and EVO+ ICL — and wonder about the difference. The team of experts at Schwartz Laser Eye Center is proud to offer both LASIK and EVO+ ICL procedures for patients who need a tailored approach to vision correction. Below, our doctors detail the differences between the two.

EVO+ ICL

The EVO+ ICL is an Implantable Collamer® Lens that treats myopia and astigmatism. The lens is inserted between the iris and the eye’s natural lens, effectively reducing or eliminating the need for eyeglasses and contact lenses. The lens is composed of a unique blend of plastic and collagen, which creates a flexible, natural-feeling lens that is lighter than many other lenses. The lens contains a tiny hole in its center, allowing the eye’s drainage system to continue working without impairment. Benefits include:

  • Excellent alternative to other types of vision correction
  • Lasting results
  • Immediate results
  • Reduced risk of dry eye
  • Improved night vision

LASIK

LASIK is a type of laser eye surgery that is designed to correct a range of vision issues, including nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and age-related farsightedness. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and works by changing the shape of the cornea. In the eye, the cornea is the rounded, clear layer of the eye that plays a key role in the quality of your vision. If the cornea is misshapen, it can change the path of light entering the eye, causing blurry vision. LASIK works by directing a specialized laser beam at the cornea to reshape it, allowing you to experience crisp vision.

Is LASIK Better Than EVO+ ICL?

While both procedures are designed to correct vision, the main difference between the two is the approach. LASIK procedures utilize an excimer laser to change the shape of the cornea, whereas EVO+ ICL involves the insertion of a lens. Additionally, both options offer permanent results, but the EVO+ ICL has the option to be removed by a doctor. Candidacy requirements also differ for each procedure, and those who may be eligible for EVO+ ICL may not be LASIK candidates.
